Clowesia rósea × Catasetum Ivanae
A dream Catasetinae cross for anyone who loves pendant, flower-packed spikes. This hybrid combines the soft, elegant, many-flowered style of Clowesia rósea with the boldness and flower substance of Catasetum Ivanae, giving you long, showy chains of pink, speckled blooms that look like a floral waterfall.
The photo you shared shows exactly what this type of cross can do: multiple arching/pending inflorescences, tight flower spacing, and uniform colour across the spike – this is what makes it “show bench” worthy.
Why this hybrid is special
-
Showy pendant spikes – flowers are carried in dense, hanging clusters, perfect for hanging baskets or displaying from above.
-
Beautiful colour – tones of rose-pink / raspberry with spotting, inherited from the Clowesia parent, but with extra fullness from the Catasetum side.
-
Good shape & substance – Catasetum Ivanae improves the flower form so blooms don’t look thin or papery.
-
Fragrance potential – most Clowesia × Catasetum crosses are pleasantly scented, especially in the first half of the day.
-
Deciduous, easy to manage – like other Catasetinae, it rests after the growing season, so it actually becomes a low-maintenance plant for part of the year.
-
Great for collectors – an unusual combination, excellent material if you’re building a Catasetinae collection.
Parentage notes
-
Clowesia rósea brings: many flowers per spike, soft pastel colour, fragrance, and pendant display.
-
Catasetum Ivanae brings: stronger stems, bigger growth, improved flower substance, and richer colour.
-
Together, the cross leans toward full, pendant, multi-flowered displays – exactly what hobbyists want in hanging Catasetinae.
Growth & rest period
This is a deciduous Catasetinae: leaves will yellow and drop at the end of the season – this is normal for the group and not a health issue. During the active season, it likes water and feed to build strong pseudobulbs; during rest, keep it much drier until new growth and roots resume.
(We’re intentionally not listing temperature ranges here; follow your standard Catasetinae culture.)
Display ideas
-
Grow in a hanging basket / net pot so the spikes can hang naturally.
-
Keep the plant slightly elevated for photos – the pendant spikes look stunning from eye level.
-
Works beautifully in shaded orchid houses and show tables.
